What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is inflammatory disease of tissues surrounding and supporting the tooth. Gum disease can be seen in all individuals, including children. It is more common in adults. If left untreated, it can cause gingival recession, tooth swing and tooth loss. Gum disease begins with gingivitis. At this stage, the gums are bleeding, swollen and red. This period is usually painless. If untreated, it progresses to periodontitis. Periodontitis is the progression of gingivitis, causing damage to the gum and the surrounding female alveolar bone. At this stage the periodontal pocket is formed between the teeth and gums. Periodontal pocket facilitates progression of infection. As the disease progresses, the teeth begin to sway. If untreated, the teeth may go into the shot.
